Good News for Mid-Range Restaurants
Could a bad economy actually be good for casual-dining restaurants? Some consultants are saying a qualified yes.
Mid-range restaurants may be able to attract new customers as well as their regular patrons if they distinguish themselves from the competition. Consumers who were formerly fine diners are now visiting new places with lower check averages. A good deal—value for their money—is essential to everyone these days. But that’s not the only factor. Price alone won’t make a restaurant stand out. “Food quality and cleanliness always trump value in consumer surveys,” said Dennis Lombardi of WD Partners, the firm which worked with Nation’s Restaurant News on the recent Consumer Picks study. “Don’t ever sacrifice those two attributes just to get better value.”
Strong branding is also a key component. Find something about your operation that sets you apart and emphasize that in your advertising and promotion. Capitalize on what you’re good at, whether it’s your fresh ingredients or friendly service. Build your brand AND offer a good value.
The #1 spot was claimed by Bonefish Grill, which is known for its fresh fish dinners as well as signature cocktails. Bonefish was the top-scoring chain among men and Millenials (customers age 18-29).
The final secret to success, according to several ‘Hot Concepts’ winners, is an intangible connection with guests. Don’t just fill your customers’ stomachs, give them an experience, something they can tell their friends about. Offer a sense of belonging and you’ll build a strong loyalty with your customers.
OSI Restaurants picked as Consumer Favorites

Congratulations to OSI, who recently had three of its divisions ranked in the Top 10 of casual dining chains by Nation’s Restaurant News. The Consumer Picks study, conducted by NRN and WD Partners, rated 33 full-service restaurant chains based on customer preferences. The study found that food quality is the most important attribute to consumers when dining out, followed by cleanliness, service, value and atmosphere.
OSI’s flagship, Outback, ranked #7 on the list. Known for its steaks and Australian-themed settings, Outback scored high marks for brand reputation and cleanliness.
Carrabba’s Italian Grill was consumers’ #4 pick. Carrabba’s prepares fresh Italian food in a casual setting with an open kitchen. Food quality is consistently high, according to the survey respondents.
